Special Guest Speaker at the ACT Shelter November Forum

Posted: 29-Oct-2012

ACT Shelter November Forum

Presented in conjunction with ACT Tenants' Union
and International Union of Tenants

International guest speaker€ - Magnus Hammar, Secretary General, International Union of Tenants

Magnus Hammar is the Secretary General of the International Union of Tenants (IUT), based in Stockholm Sweden. His previous posts include teaching biology and chemistry at secondary level and Head of Educational Department in the United Nations (UN) Association Sweden. Magnus has served as non-government organisation representative with the Swedish government at several UN meetings, including UN Habitat in Nairobi and UN World Urban Forums. Magnus has particularly studied the housing situation in Central and Eastern Europe and currently leads IUT projects in Slovakia, Slovenia and Russia. He has travelled to Australia to present at the National Housing Conference in Brisbane and is visiting east coast states and territories to talk about the IUT and the rental situation in Europe.

Magnus feels strongly that security of tenure is particularly important for tenants and that rental contracts should not be possible to terminate without just grounds. Furthermore, tenants should be given the right to participate in decision making in issues that involve housing costs and the housing environment generally.

IUT is a membership based organisation, with 61 national and regional members  in 45 countries (including 7 in Australia). IUT works for tenants' rights, security of tenure and improved rental housing conditions and aims at realising the right for everyone to enjoy good rental housing, which includes fair and affordable rents, in a safe and sound residential environment.  For more information on IUT visit their website.
