Fair Go! Rentals is a campaign to set minimum rental standards in the ACT.
Greens MLA Shane Rattenbury has tabled tabled a draft Bill in the Legislative Assembly.
The proposed new laws that will ensure that Canberra rental properties will need to meet minimum standards, including energy and water efficiency, security, and damp.
"We don’t think it’s fair that Canberra renters have to pay high rents and high electricity bills at the same time just because the roof doesn’t have insulation, or windows can’t be opened in summer without letting the mozzies in. We are proposing new laws to ensure rental properties must meet minimum standards – the very basics that all respectable rentals should have."
TUACT knows about the poor condition of some ACT rental properties and how tenants living in them suffer physically and financially.
We know that there are landlords who have demonstrated their lack of interest in incentives and rebates that cost them little
but benefit tenants.
These are the reasons why minimum standards are necessary. The ACT Greens proposed laws will go a long way to address this serious problem.
