Become a member and strengthen the Union's voice on housing issues.

 


In addition to advice through the TAS line the TU provides other services that assist tenants and people working with tenancy or housing issues to keep abreast of changes in tenancy law and other relevant issues. These include:

  • General tenancy information based in the most common issues and questions brought to the advice line can often provide the basics needed to address many issues people renting face (go to our advice pages);
  • Workshops and presentations on tenancy rights and issues (see below)
  • E-mail list for those interested in tenancy and housing issues
  • Tenant News, our newsletter providing updates on changes in the law, current issues and information on issues in the ACT, interstate and overseas
  • TU Noticeboard, regularly updating news and information
  • Information Stalls at events
  • Projects on tenancy and renting issues
  • TUACT annual report, providing an overview of activities for the year

v Tenancy workshops and presentations

The TU offers workshops and/or presentations on basic tenancy rights and issues.

Who for?  

  • groups of ACT tenants, and others renting their accommodation, can be organised by community groups, workplaces, interest groups
     

  • workers in organisations who come into contact with tenants and tenancy issues, as well as occupants and occupancy issues

What do they include?

  • overview of basic rights and responsibilities

  • overview of common issues and resolution of disputes

  • information kits covering presentation material

  • in some cases information manuals (eg for day long workshop on Domestic Violence and Tenancy Law)

How long are they?

They can be tailored to meet the needs of attendees and range from 15 minutes overviews to hour long presentations during lunch hours, staff meetings or special meetings. 

Longer workshops are also offered on specific issues.  An example of this is our annual day long Domestic Violence and Tenancy workshop

How much do they cost?

Most presentations and workshops are free of charge and are offered as part of the service we are funded to provided.  If materials provided are our general materials they are also free of charge.

Longer training workshops for workers to assist tenants who may have tenancy issues do involve a fee to cover the cost of producing materials and any other costs such as venue/meals etc.

Tenant News provides updates on tenancy law changes, information on other issues relevant to renting in the ACT, useful advice for tenants on current issues, as well as information about tenancy issues across Australia and overseas in every issue.

v  Tenants Advice Service information stalls

The TU participates in community events through providing information stalls.  These stalls are an opportunity to talk with someone about the TU and generally about tenancy issues.  TU publications, and information about other organisations that can help with tenancy related issues are also available.

If you are organising an event and you would like such a stall please contact us.

v  TUACT Annual Reports

As an incorporated association the TUACT is required to produce annual reports that provide information about the previous twelve months of activities as a report from an auditor on financial matters.  Our annual reports provide an overview of renting and renting issues in the previous twelve months as well as details of our services and activities.
